Roof tent for Volkswagen Transporter

The Volkswagen Transporter is one of the classic European bases for camping builds, surf trips and work-to-weekend conversions. T4 standard metal-roof versions are listed around 100 kg, while T4 double cab, cab or pop-up roof cases can be lower. T5/T6/T6.1 normal-roof vans are commonly around 100 kg with two base carriers and 150 kg with three or more carriers where Volkswagen guidance allows it; some stationary roof-tent guidance can be much higher only under strict parked-use conditions. The T7/new Transporter normal roof is listed around 170 kg, which is promising, but still needs exact rack and mounting instructions. Always confirm the exact Transporter generation, roof height, body type, mounting points, camper conversion and dynamic versus parked load before choosing a rooftop tent.

Transporter T4 1990-2003 with a standard metal roof normally uses rain-gutter bars or a gutter rack. T5/T6/T6.1 2003-2024 normal-roof vans need Thule, Yakima or similar fixed-point/van-point bars matched to the M6 roof points and the required number of supports. Caravelle, California or Transporter versions with T-track/accessory rails need the correct T-track carrier, while raised-rail retrofit cases need proof that the rails are load-bearing. High roof, pop-up roof, roof cut-out, cab, double-cab, body-builder or canopy cases need body-specific approval. T7 Transporter from 2024 onward needs a T7-specific van-point or approved rail system. Van bars usually weigh around 6-7 kg and full platforms can be heavier, so check the complete setup - tent, rack and mounting hardware together. Use Thule, Yakima or converter-approved Transporter-specific gutter, fixed-point, van-point, T-track, canopy or platform system.
