Does Subaru Outback have enough roof load capacity?
The Subaru Outback is one of the classic adventure wagons: comfortable on long roads, confident on rougher tracks and naturally suited to camping trips. Roof load depends heavily on generation and roof rail design. Older and mid-generation Outbacks often sit around 68-80 kg depending on the factory rail or crossbar system, while Field or Wilderness-style raised-rail variants can be listed around 100 kg. Standard integrated crossbars are not the same as a dedicated raised-rail roof-tent setup, so this is a model where the exact roof system matters more than the badge. Always check the owner's manual/handbook or vehicle technical certificate, if the roof-load figure is listed there, for your exact Outback generation and roof rail type before choosing a rooftop tent.
What roof bars do I need for Subaru Outback to install a rooftop tent?
Subaru Outback 2003-2009 with flush rails and Outback 2009-2014 with flush rails need flush-rail bars. Outback 2014-2020 with integrated rails/crossbars needs a Thule, Yakima or similar system approved for that generation. The original integrated or stowable crossbars can be too flexible for some rooftop-tent setups, so it is worth checking whether they can be replaced with a separate, stronger bar system that is suitable for the exact year and roof type. Outback VI/BT standard versions from 2020 onward with stowable integrated crossbars should not be treated like a raised-rail setup without checking the carrier documentation. Outback Field or Wilderness-style variants from 2020 onward with raised roof rails need raised-rail bars. Roof bars on a wagon like the Outback usually weigh around 5-6 kg, so check the complete setup - tent, bars and mounting hardware together. Universal roof bars from our range can also be used on Outback 2003-2009 with flush rails, Outback 2009-2014 with flush rails and Outback Field/Wilderness-style raised-rail variants from 2020 onward. For 2014-2020 integrated-bar versions and standard 2020 onward integrated-crossbar versions, contact us and we can check the possible stronger bar-system solutions together according to the exact year and roof type.
