Roof tent for Land Rover Discovery

The Land Rover Discovery has real expedition credibility, but the roof-load numbers change a lot by generation. Discovery I and II factory rail or gutter contexts are commonly around 50 kg on road and 30 kg off road, which is tight for a hard-shell rooftop tent. Discovery 3 and 4 move closer to around 75 kg on road and 50 kg off road, while Discovery 5 is commonly around 80 kg total roof load or around 74 kg accessory payload depending on the source wording. It can be a good camping base, but only when the rack system, road/off-road use and exact vehicle limit line up. Always confirm the exact Discovery generation, rail type, off-road derating and rack approval before choosing a rooftop tent.

Discovery I and II need generation-specific raised-rail, gutter or platform systems, and their lower roof-load figures should be checked individually. Discovery 3 and 4 with factory rails need the correct raised-rail or factory-point rack system for L319. Discovery 5/L462 with flush rails needs Discovery 5-specific flush-rail bars or a rated platform, while versions without rails need the approved rail/base system first. Roof bars on a large SUV usually weigh around 6-7 kg and platforms can be heavier, so check the complete setup - tent, rack and mounting hardware together. Use Thule, Yakima or another approved Discovery-generation-specific rail, fixed-point or platform system.
