SNAILER® rooftop tents are designed as universal – they can be attached to almost any vehicle equipped with transverse roof racks (crossbars). It is not necessary to choose a tent according to a specific car brand or model. However, it is important that both the racks and the vehicle's roof itself have sufficient load capacity. Check the vehicle's registration certificate for the maximum permitted roof load; the dynamic load capacity must cover the weight of the tent and the racks themselves.
Yes – even if the weight of the tent might be close to the dynamic load capacity limit, there is no need to worry. The stated limit (e.g., 75 kg) applies to driving; it is the dynamic load capacity of the roof. The static load capacity (when the car is stationary) is several times higher. It is common practice to count on the vehicle's roof being able to carry the entire weight of the car in the event of a rollover, so it can easily handle a tent with occupants. The tents are mounted on crossbars that distribute the weight to the load-bearing points – with correct installation, there is no risk of denting or scratching the roof. Just ensure an even weight distribution and follow the recommended installation procedure.
We recommend using quality crossbars with side overhang (i.e., those that protrude on the sides past the rack feet). Their load capacity should be at least at the level of the tent's weight. Overhanging crossbars have several advantages:
Higher load capacity and rigidity: They usually carry a larger load because they have a better weight distribution onto the foot - pressure acts perpendicularly on the foot.
More comfortable installation: They create more space between the roof and the tent, making handling and attachment of the tent easier. (In some cases, crossbars without overhang may even be too short for attaching the tent.)
If you want to avoid complications, choose racks with overhang instead.
