Does Land Rover Defender have enough roof load capacity?
The Land Rover Defender is one of the few vehicles where rooftop camping feels almost native to the character of the car. Classic Defender L316 station wagons can be very strong with a proper gutter-mounted roof rack, with documented rack systems often handled around 150 kg road load. L663 Defender 90 from 2020 onward is commonly listed around 118 kg dynamic roof load, while Defender 110 and 130 are commonly listed around 168 kg when equipped with the correct roof rails and rack system. That gives the Defender a much stronger starting point than most passenger cars, but trim, roof finishers, V8/OCTA versions and accessory racks still matter. Always confirm the exact Defender generation, body length, roof rails, accessory rack and roof-load value in the owner's manual/handbook or vehicle technical certificate, if it is listed there, before choosing a rooftop tent.
What roof bars do I need for Land Rover Defender to install a rooftop tent?
Classic Defender L316 station wagons usually need heavy-duty gutter bars or a full expedition platform. L663 Defender 90, 110 and 130 with factory raised roof rails need Defender-specific raised-rail bars, a Land Rover accessory rack or a rated expedition platform. L663 versions without the proper load-bearing rails or with checker/roof finishers need the correct rail or platform system before a rooftop tent is considered. Large SUV bars or expedition racks usually add around 6-7 kg, and full platforms can be heavier, so check the complete setup - tent, rack and mounting hardware together. Use Thule, Yakima or another approved Defender-specific gutter, raised-rail or platform system.
