Does Opel Combo have enough roof load capacity?
The Opel Combo is a practical compact van and family MPV with a long, usable roof that suits road trips, camping and compact camper builds. Roof capacity depends on the generation, body and carrier configuration. Combo C 2001-2011 and standard-roof Combo D/H1 2012-2018 have an official permissible roof load of 100 kg including the roof rack. On Combo E from 2018 onward, official documentation distinguishes between configurations: versions with factory longitudinal roof rails are listed at 80 kg, while versions without rails can carry 100 kg with two roof bars. Approved three-bar or full-rack configurations can have higher limits, but those figures apply only to the exact system described in the vehicle manual. Both 80 kg and 100 kg provide a useful basis for a SNAILER rooftop tent with the correct carrier. Combo D high-roof H2 versions are the clear exception because Opel does not permit a roof rack on that roof.
Always confirm the exact Combo generation, Cargo, Tour or Life body, H1 or H2 roof, carrier configuration and roof-load value in the owner's manual/handbook or vehicle technical certificate, if it is listed there, before choosing a rooftop tent.
What roof bars do I need for Opel Combo to install a rooftop tent?
Combo B 1993-2001 with a plain roof needs an exact model-specific normal-roof clamp kit, and its vehicle roof-load value must be confirmed separately. Combo C 2001-2011 uses factory fixed mounting points and needs a Combo C-specific fixed-point bar system. Standard-roof Combo D/H1 uses the documented roof mounting holes, while Combo D Tour with factory open raised rails needs raised-rail bars. Do not install roof bars or a rooftop tent on Combo D/H2 because Opel prohibits roof racks on the high-roof version. Combo E Cargo and other versions without longitudinal rails use van-specific bars or a rack attached to the factory roof points. Combo E Life with factory flush or integrated rails needs an exact flush-rail kit. On panoramic or overhead-storage roof versions, the glass is not a mounting surface; use a rooftop-tent carrier only where the approved rails or fixed points remain available and the required clearance is documented. A two-bar van system usually weighs around 6-7 kg, while multi-bar and full-rack systems are heavier, so check the complete setup - tent, carrier and mounting hardware together.
Use Thule, Yakima or another exact approved Combo-specific normal-roof, fixed-point, raised-rail, flush-rail or van-rack system for the exact generation and body. Do not transfer the higher capacity of a three-bar or full-rack configuration to a standard two-bar setup.
